Having trouble?  Here are some frequently asked game-related questions to help you out.  If you have read the FAQs and are still none the wiser, get in touch and I'll do my bestest to help.  //

  • // Who made these games?

I, Paul Neave made all the games featured on Neave Games.  But I didn't make the original arcade games.  Those were made by many different people and video game companies ranging from Atari to Taito.  My versions are faithful recreations of the original arcade games, made from scratch using lots of coding jiggerypokery in Adobe Flash.

  • // It doesn't work when I click PLAY

Please make sure JavaScript is enabled and the latest Flash Player is installed.  I also recommend you use the brilliant Firefox web browser instead of Internet Explorer.

  • // Can I play a game in full screen?

Click on the small white arrow in the top-right corner of the game window and the game will start again in full screen mode.  Alternatively, whilst playing a game, right-click (Mac owners use control-click) and select the option "Start game in full screen" from the drop-down menu.

  • // How do I control a game?  What are 'arrow keys'?

Games can be played either with the mouse or arrow keys on the keyboard.  Games which use the arrow keys are Asteroids, Frogger, N-Blox, Snake and Space Invaders.  Arrow keys can be found in the lower-right part of your keyboard.  If you would prefer to play with different keys, you can use the following alternatives:

    Keyboard
    Up – W or  ’
    Down – S or /
    Left – A or Z
    Right – D or X

    Pause game – P
    Quit game – Q
    Mute sound – M
Fire or other – space key

All games also have the option to pause at any time by pressing the P key, mute the sound by pressing the M key or quit the game by pressing the Q key.

  • // Your games are old and boring

I love the old skool games, and even though they may be old, it's the simplicity I like about them.  Yes, they don't have fancy whizz-bang XBox 360 graphics, but that's the point.  They're designed to be basic and to give the feeling of playing the original retro arcade game.

  • // Can I add a game to my website/MySpace/Facebook profile page?

You can copy and paste the HTML code found at the bottom of each game page or use the code found on Widgetbox to add a game to your website or profile page.  It should work if you have your own website or a page on MySpace or other social networking website.

  • // Can I have my own high score table?

No, only one universal high score table is available.

  • // Can I download a game or have its source code?

Sorry, downloads and source code are not available for the games.

  • // Can you make a game for me?

No, I'm afraid I do not licence or make customised games.

  • // Can I link to your games?

Sure, please feel free to link to anything you to want to on Neave.com.

  • // Can I use a joystick or controller with the games?

No, sorry.  Unfortunately Flash does not support joysticks or external controllers of any kind, and so they cannot be used with the games.

  • // When are the high scores reset?

High scores for all games are reset at every midnight PST, which is 8am GMT.

  • // How do some people get such high scores?

They must be very clever.  Here's a video of one guy scoring 13 million in N-Blox and another person managed to score nearly 6000 on the Python level in Snake.

  • // Can I put the games onto my Joomla site?

Yes, you can use a component called PUArcade.

  • // Did you make the Arcade! Classic Arcade Pack?

I didn't create the software available on arcadeclassicpack.com or Openwares.org even though it features some of my games.  The author is called "Zobber" and I'd appreciate if you could put any questions about it to Openwares directly rather than to myself.

  • // Do you own freetetris.org or freepacman.org?

No, these are owned by Alx Klive who runs freevideogamesonline.org, although versions of my games can be found on that website.  Neave Games will always have the most up-to-date versions of the games with bug fixes and new features, so you're probably best playing them here rather than anywhere else.

  • // Why is N-Blox not called Tetris?

Tetris was renamed N-Blox at the request of The Tetris Company LLC as it was seen to be an illegal use of their trademark.  The N stands for Neave, the Blox stands for... blocks, and it fits nicely into the space where the word Tetris used to be.  Other than that, it's a very silly name and it should really be called Tetris, but I'm not allowed to call it that any more.  Hopefully it doesn't spoil the game too much though.

  • // What happened to Pac-Man?

The copyright owners Namco decided they didn't like me any more and I had to remove it.  Calling it N-Maze wouldn't have helped either.  Even so, the Flash version can still be found lurking around on the web if you search for it.

  • // Will you be making any more games?

I would love to, but due to the copyright problems I've had already I'm in no rush to make any more games soon.  If you have any suggestions for new games or ideas for improving the current ones, please send them in to me.

  • // What's with all the pink?

It's more magenta than pink.  And I think it looks very cool.  So there.
